For most recruiters, the most unfulfilling, mundane part of hiring is the reference check. Frequently, our calls go unanswered – and when someone does pick up on the other end, we’re either cited “no comment” protection policies or transferred to an HR staffer who provides little more than the corporate equivalent of name, rank, and serial number.
Yet reference checking, when done correctly, can be a goldmine of valuable information. The question then becomes, how do we get such information without having to delicately handle reference providers with white gloves or coax HR staffers into digging beyond the first page of a candidate’s file?
